Highbury Rise – Hitchin

Highbury Rise | Hitchin

Linda Pennells the manager joined Benslow in 2010.

Description of home

Highbury Rise home is a small friendly home offering long term and respite care to older people living with dementia. The home has 21 single bedrooms, and 1 double bedroom, 2 lounges and a lounge/dining room with patio doors, which open onto a paved patio area and attractive gardens.

Location

Located on a quiet residential road, Highbury Rise is a short walk away from Hitchin’s lovely market town centre. Getting to the home by public transport is easy as there is a bus stop just around the corner and the train station is also only a short walk away. By car, we are close to Junction 7 of the A1 (M) (motorway).

The environment

The first thing you notice the moment you step into Highbury Rise is everyone’s positive and friendly approach. Staff and service users alike are always given a warm welcome and we work hard to ensure there is a happy and family atmosphere to the place. To add to this homely feel, Highbury Rise is organised to resemble a home with separate areas for those who wish to sit quietly, socialise with each other or join in with activities. If they wish, residents can have their room decorated and personalised to their own liking. They are also encouraged to bring items such as photos, treasured ornaments and favourite pieces of furniture.

Activities for residents

Here at Highbury we follow the company ethos, to support our residents to lead a fulfilled life, much of this is achieved through activities.

There is a wide programme of organised activities at Highbury Rise overseen by our full time activity organiser. These are designed to cover a range of interests, from sing-along’s and arts and crafts to cooking and reminiscence sessions. Singers and musicians come to entertain, and a Pet as Therapy dog visits the home every week. There are also opportunities for individuals to be involved with every day activities within the home and gardens, through choice expressed at residents meetings . Our activity organiser will support the residents to get as much as they can from the programme. Maria our activity organiser has organised a variety of special outings including a ring side position to see the Queen when she arrived at Hitchin trian station for her Jubilee tour. Our care team take small groups on shopping trips and to the local pub for lunch. We also organise a number of summer outings.

Highbury Rise is a member of NAPA “The National Assocation for Providers of Activities for Older People”.

Wholesome tasty food

Highbury Rise, along with the other homes belonging to Benslow, supports Bedfordshire “Food First” programme. The accreditation is not available in Hertfordshire for providing good quality nutrition using real food, our home in Bedfordshire has been accredited and Highbury Rise is following their lead and standards.

All meals are prepared and cooked in the homes kitchen by dedicated cooks committed to delivering what the residents enjoy. Our residents contribute to what is included on our menus, which changes with the season, through preferences expressed during residents meeting. Each day there is a choice of meal available, but if the individual does not want either choice an alternative can always be organised. Meal times are often thought of as one of the many “Highlights of the day” and we ensure that it is enjoyable for all, including those that need extra supersupport. We cater for individual dietary requirements and, for those special occasions, our cook will be delighted to arrange something exceptional.

Our Kitchen have been awarded 5 stars (excellent) from enviromental Health Dept.

Friends and family

We always extend a warm welcome to friends and relatives into the life of Highbury Rise with invites to fetes, dinner party’s, entertainment and seasonal events.

That’s why visitors are able to feel entirely at ease when they come here, as if they were visiting their loved one in their own home.

We have opening visiting and our staff team are always available to answer your questions. We welcome feedback from family and friends and endeavour to uncorporate this in the individual care that is delivered in the home.

Garden setting

When the weather is fine, residents and their families can relax outdoors in our spacious and secure grounds, complete with garden seating and patio area. In the summer, we organise garden parties to which friends and family are warmly invited.

Professional Services

We have regular visits from a GP, Chiropodist, District Nurses, Hairdresser and mobile library, and can arrange appointments with dentists and opticians, as required. Specialist health care e.g physiotheraphy can be arranged on a referral basis by the residents GP.

Community spirit

Ensuring our residents remain involved in the life of the community helps keep them independent and active. That’s why we make sure we maintain excellent ties with charities such as Age Concern, Alzheimer’s Society, Local schools, Church and with outside entertainment groups, enabling our residents to spend time interacting with a variety of different people.
