Description of home

Chiltern View home is a beautiful three storey building offering long term and respite residential care to the eldely and those individuals living with dementia. Chiltern View has 34 single bedrooms, some of which are large enough to accommodate sharing companions should this be requested, most of the bedrooms are ensuite.

Location

Chiltern View is located on a residential road at the foot of the Chiltern Hills, close to a range of local amenities and to Dunstable town centre. Getting to the home by public transport is easy as there is a bus stop just across the road. By car, we are close to Junction 11 of the M1 (motorway).

The environment

The first thing you notice the moment you step into Chiltern View is everyone’s positive and friendly approach. Staff and service users alike are always given a warm welcome and we work hard to ensure there is a happy and family atmosphere to the home.

To add to this homely feel, residents can have their room decorated and personalised to their own liking. They are also encouraged to bring items such as photos, treasured ornaments and favourite pieces of furniture.

Chiltern View home is set over 3 floors, accessible by a passenger lift. The ground floor accommodates a large lounge that is divided into seating and dinning areas with patio doors opening up to a secure landscaped garden. There is a separate sensory room, 1960′s quite lounge also on this floor. These communal areas are designed to ensure residents have a choice of where they would like to relax. In addition there is a 1960′s kitchenette where families and residents can help themselves to refreshments. The garden is beautifully landscaped with plenty of seating, this has been the venue for many garden parties.

Activities for residents

There is a wide programme of organised activities at Chiltern View overseen by our full time activity organiser. These are designed to cover a range of interests, from sing-along’s and arts and crafts to cooking and reminiscence sessions. Singers and musicians come to entertain. For those who are able, our care team take small groups on shopping trips, to the local pub for lunch and in the summer trips to the seaside, the zoo and boat trips on the grand union canel. Our activity programme looks at the whole person and their core needs, it is designed to include both social and meaningful activities. Residents who live in the home strongly influence what is included in the programme, through choice expressed in residents meetings and preferences obtained via their life history information.

Chiltern View is also a member of NAPA “The National Association for Providers of Activities for Older People”

Wholesome tasty food

Chiltern View has been awarded ”Food First Accreditation”. It is one of nine homes in Bedfordshire that has achieved this award for providing good quality nutrition using real food. Chiltern View has been featured on BBC Look East along with the Food First team in a report about the principles of using real food for nutrition and how effective this has been.

All meals are prepared and cooked in the homes kitchen by our dedicated chef committed to delivering what the residents enjoy. Every day there is a choice of menu, we serve meals that are both tasty and nutritious, using local produce where possible. Menus are changed on a regular basis and our Chef likes to meet with residents to discuss their personal preferences.

We cater for individual dietary requirements and, for those special occasions, our chef will be delighted to arrange something different.

Meal times are often thought of as one of the many “Highlights of the day” and we ensure that the experience is enjoyable for all, including those that need extra support.

Our Kitchen has been awarded 4 stars (Good) from Enviromental Health Dept.

Friends and family

We always extend a warm welcome to friends and relatives into the life of Chiltern View with invites to Fetes, Dinners party entertainment and seasonal events, that’s why visitors are able to feel entirely at ease when they come here, as if they were visiting their loved one in their own home.

Chiltern View has its own relatives association who met on a regular basis with the manager and deputy, this has been a very effective forum for relatives to influence how we manage our service.

We have open visiting and our staff team are always available to answer your questions. We welcome feedback from family and friends and endeavour to incorporate this in the individual care that is delivered in the home.

Garden setting

When the weather is fine, residents and their families and friends can relax outdoors in our spacious and secure landscaped grounds, complete with garden seating, pergola and patio area. In the summer, we organise fetes and barbecues to which friends and family are warmly invited.

Professional Services

We have regular visits from local GP’s, chiropodist, dentists, opticians, hairdresser and mobile library, and can arrange appointments with specialist health care e.g physiotherapy, this can be arranged on a referral basis by the residents GP.

Community spirit

Supporting our residents to remain involved in the local community helps them to retain their identity and former ties. We ensure we maintain excellent ties with local charities for example the Alzheimer’s Society, local schools, church and interest groups. Also trips out to the local town and surrounding areas, ensure our residents have the opportunity to interact with a variety of different people and age groups.
